Aquino regime behind killing of Central Luzon environmental, peasant activists

The Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) today condemned the Aquino regime and its reactionary armed forces for carrying out the successive killings of peasant advocates and environmental activists Romualdo Palispis and Willem Geertman over the past few days.

"The successive killings of Palispis and Geertman highlight the continuing campaign of terror and extrajudicial killings being carried out by the reactionary armed forces through its death squads under the Aquino regime's Oplan Bayanihan campaign of suppression," said the CPP.

Geertman, 67, a Dutch social worker, was shot dead yesterday noon by motorcylce-riding gunmen outside the office of the Alay Bayan-Luzon, Inc (ABI) in Sto. Domingo, Angeles, Pampanga. Geertman, who served as executive director of ABI, has long been active in peasant and environmental struggles in the Philippines. He has also long been actively involved in the struggles of the farm workers of Hacienda Luisita and supportive of the struggles against landgrabbing and displacement of farmers.

Last Saturday evening, Palispis, 54, was gunned down in front of his home in Barangay Tres, Maria Aurora, Aurora. Palispia was a member of Bayan Muna and an active advocate of environmental causes.

The CPP expressed its sympathies to the families, friends and colleagues of Geertman and Palispis.

"The murders of Geertman and Palispis call our attention to the fact that extra-judicial killings by death squads of the AFP continue unabated under the Aquino regime," said the CPP. Human rights monitors have documented at least 80 cases of extrajudicial killings of progressive activists, many of whom are peasant and anti-mining activists.

"On the average, at least one activist opposed to the antipeople, undemocratic and pro-imperialist policies of the Aquino regime was killed by armed agents of the reactionary state every ten days over the past two years," pointed out the CPP. "The ravages of the Aquino regime's Oplan Bayanihan are proving to be not much different from the onslaught of the nine-year Oplan Bantay Laya campaign of suppression carried out by the Arroyo regime."

"After more than two years in power, the Aquino regime has yet to resolve any of the outstanding cases of extrajudicial killing during the Arroyo regime nor castigated the AFP or its attached armed death squads for the grave violations of human rights."
