  • Sunday, Jun 22 2014
On June 19, 2014, special forces who are members of the Joint Special Operation Group (JSOP) tasked to track down kidnap-for-ransom gang members encountered members of the notorious Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) headed by sub leader Hairul Asbang at the village of Buhanginan, Patikul, Sulu that resulted to the death of 10 ASG members, 7 members of the JSOG including a certain 1st Lieutenant Flores and 24 wounded in action.
Patikul is a known lair of the dreaded kidnap-for-ransom gang. As of last night, one of the remains of the slain soldiers was airlifted to Zamboanga City, another one to Legaspi City and five (5) to Villamor Airbase.

Another clash at Barangay Darayan of Patikul town took place while soldiers were on a military operation. Firefights still rage until June 21 and shelling of ASG camp continues. The military are using helicopter gunships, mortars and heavy artillery shelling that also hit the house of the Patikul MILF Municipal Chairman but no casualties were reported.

Captain Maria Rowena Muyuela, Spokesman of WestMinCom said that the ensuing encounter took place while the Marines were conducting patrol operations in the hinterlands of Patikul.

Riza Lacbao of Zamboanga Times quoting Captain Muyuela said that most of the government casualties were hit by enemy mortar fires.

Government troops in coordination with Philippine National Police are conducting follow up operation to locate the enemies said Lacbao in her report.
