Canadian Ambassador Neil Reeder -- Carmencita A. Carillo of Business World

During his visit to Davao City last Friday, July 3 where he attended the opening of the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Expo, his Excellency Canadian Ambassador to the PhilippinesNeil Reeder said that the government can expect more investment from Canada once the Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL) is passed by Congress.

“We expect Canadian investments to increase with the passage of the BBL. We continue to support the Bangsamoro peace process and all efforts to implement a comprehensive agreement,” said Ambassador Reeder.

Mr. Reeder said while Canadian investments are currently focused in Manila and Cebu, he expects more ventures in Mindanao with the anticipated improvements in peace, security and overall economic climate arising from the implementation of the new law.

Among others, Canada is eyeingagri-food sector, bio-waste, and mining in Mindanao.

The country is Canada’s priority trade and investment markets under its Global Markets Action Plan.
During the 148th Canada Day celebration in the Davao City last Thursday, Mr. Reeder also stressed Canada’s support for the peace process in the Philippines .

The Canadian Government has been working closely with the peace panels, including the development of alternatives for a new policing structure within the proposed Bangsamoro Region.

“Our government applauds the determination of the Government of the Philippines and the members of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front to move forward with the peace process,” Mr. Reeder said.

“The start of the decommissioning process demonstrates the willingness of both sides to pave the way forward for lasting peace and stability, development and long-term economic prosperity for the people of southern Philippines and all Filipinos who have endured decades of conflict,” he added.
