Permanent ceasefire call a cover-up for AFP violations in Cordillera — NDFP

Permanent ceasefire call a cover-up for AFP violations in Cordillera — NDFP

NDFP Media Office Press release
May 19, 2017

A call by local Cordillera executives for a permanent ceasefire between the Government of the Republic of the Philippines (GRP) and the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP) that will prohibit “communist guerrillas” from “attacking the civilian populace” is a desperate attempt to divert public attention from the human rights violations being inflicted by state security forces on national minority communities.

Coni Ledesma, a member of the NDFP Human Rights Monitoring Committee said that she was not surprised that the Cordillera local government officials issued the call two days after human rights activists from Cordillera and Mindanao trooped to the offices of the GRP-NDFP Joint Monitoring Committee (JMC) on the Comprehensive Agreement on Respect for Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law (CARHRIHL) to file reports on CARHRIHL violations by the GRP military against Igorot, Lumad and Moro communities. The local executives had just attended a conference from May 15 to 17 in Baguio City organized by the Office of the Presidential Assistant on the Peace Process (OPAPP) when they issued the call.

Insurgency problem, 'unclear' DAR policies weaken PHL fruit exports

MANILA, May 12 - The continuing attacks and extortion activities by communist rebels in Mindanao and "unclear" policies on agribusiness ventures by the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) are among the factors that further weaken the country's fruit export.

Industry players and workers in the banana and pineapple sectors have expressed growing concern over the atrocities committed by New People’s Army (NPA) rebels against fruit plantations in Mindanao, despite a much-publicized interim ceasefire supposedly forged between the government and communist insurgents in the Netherlands.

Written interview with Prof. Jose Maria Sison by Manila Bulletin

A. From Isabel De Leon, MB News Editor

1. If you are given a chance to relive your live, would you choose the same path? And why?
JMS: I will continue to take the same path of fighting for the national and social liberation of the Filipino people. Since grade school, at the age of nine, I have always admired the revolutionary struggles of the Filipino people against Spanish colonialism, US imperialism and the Japanese fascist occupation. I have also always been sympathetic to the poor, exploited and oppressed people. I am committed to the continuation of the Philippine revolution of 1896 and to the attainment of full national independence, people’s democracy and socialism.

2. What is your biggest regret in life?

JMS: The biggest setback I had was being captured in 1977 and being tortured and detained until 1986. But I do not regret it. It is part of the revolutionary struggle against the US-instigated Marcos fascist dictatorship to make sacrifices, get arrested and imprisoned or even killed. I have never felt any kind of regret that makes me abandon my principles and conviction.

President Rodrigo Roa Duterte, tells policemen during his visit to the Police Regional Office-Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (PRO-ARMM) Headquarters in Parang, Maguindanao on May 5, 2017, that he is becoming “pessimistic” and “a little bit worried” on what will come out of the Bangsamoro peace process. Ace Morandante / PHOTO BY OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT
Guiamel Alim, Executive Director of the Kadtuntaya Foundation and a member of the Council of Elders of the Consortium of Bangsamoro Civil Society said that the president’s pessimism on Bangsamoro Peace Process “will weaken the resolve to the peaceful resolution of the Bangsamoro Question. It sends signal to the failure of the peace process. Masamang pangitain (Bad omen)”, Mindanews said in its May 7 report.

The people deserve justice against the oppressive and exploitative practices of the local ruling classes. This was the reaction of NDFP panel chair Fidel Agcaoili to a statement by GRP panel chair Secretary Silvestre Bello III that he would confront the NDFP concerning last Saturday’s attack on Lapanday Food Corp. (LFC) in Davao City.

Agcaoili said that a statement issued on April 30 by Rigoberto Sanchez, spokesperson of the NPA Southern Mindanao Regional Operations Command has adequately explained the reasons for the punitive action against the cruel and anti-poor landlord-comprador Lorenzo clan, owner of LFC.

OPAPP Sec. Dureza, PNP Chief Bato urge police officers to coordinate with ceasefire mechanisms

Sec. Jesus Dureza of the Office of the Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process (OPAPP) and PNP Director General Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa have urged police officers to coordinate with the ceasefire mechanisms when they conduct law enforcement operations in conflict-affected areas in the Bangsamoro, an online report by Mindanews said on April 27.
During a Forum on GPH-MILF Peace Process in Davao City on April 26, both leaders said that coordination is a way to uphold and ensure the primacy of the peace process.
In the same forum Dureza urged top police officials from the conflict areas in the Bangsamoro and neighboring regions to always remember “the bigger goal” which is to “build peace in the land”.
