AFP facilitates former rebels’ tour in Manila

CAMP AGUINALDO, Quezon City – The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) is facilitating the tour to Manila of 683 former New People’s Army (NPA) rebels from different parts of Eastern Mindanao that started Tuesday, 06 February 2018.

The first batch composed of 215 former rebels (FRs) arrived at Villamor Air Base, Pasay City on Tuesday to start their three-day tour. They flew from Davao City via two Philippine Air Force C-130 aircrafts.

President Rodrigo Duterte himself pledged to bring to Malacañang and tour the former rebels (FRs) in Manila during his visit in Panacan, Davao City on 21 December 2017. The goal is to awaken the FRs to a better perspective in life particularly in peace building and nationalism.

The Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Civil-Military Operations, OJ7, AFP led the tour of FRs in Luneta Park and Intramuros as part of their historical and heritage trip.

On Wednesday, 07 February 2018, a welcome ceremony was held in Camp Aguinaldo led by General Rey Leonardo Guerrero, AFP Chief of Staff. They also got a chance to interact with other former NPA members who now work for peace and development. A visit to Malacañan Palace to meet the President is also part of the educational tour.

The tour concludes on 08 February 2018 as the FRs will return to Davao City via C-130 aircrafts. The schedule for the other batches of FRs will be determined later on by the Appointments Office of the President.

The AFP is tasked to assist former rebels in this worthy initiative by the President. Our soldiers are committed in empowering our brothers and sisters who used to take part in NPA’s criminal activities, to now take part in building a nation of peace for progress and development.
