Pres. Duterte promises to cause passage of BBL or he might resign
Cotabato City- President Rodrigo Duterte in his speech at Buluan, Maguindanao on April 25, where he witnessed the turnover of hundreds of loose firearms, reiterated his promise made to the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), and the Moro people to push for the passage by congress of the Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL) this year"Give me time, this year, not next year, or next election. This year I will have it passed.”, Duterte said.
He added that he intends to keep his promises, and threatened to resign as president if it is not passed.
On April 2, in Sultan Kudarat, Duterte also made a similar commitment, where he disclosed that the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), who is pushing for the enactment of the proposed law was in a hurry “and placed on us the burden of a timeline”.
"And I have agreed to that period. I gave my solemn promise and I assure you I am working hard to meet the deadline," the President then said.
Congressional leaders in a meeting with Duterte also renewed their commitment to pass the bill by May 30.
The BBL in moving fast in the Senate and is ready for deliberations in the plenary, while the House Joint Committee on BBL had just adapted the BTC-Drafted BBL doing away with other versions filed by other three congressmen.
The proposed law aims to end decades of conflict in Mindanao by putting in place a new political entity called Bangsamoro.
The crafting of BBL by the Bangsamoro Transition Commission (BTC) is contained in the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro (CAB), a product of almost 17-years peace negotiation between the Government and the MILF.
