Two kidnap victims rescued in Sulu

Camp Navarro, Calarian, Zamboanga City- January 19, 2017 (3a.m.) – Two (2) Filipinos held captive by the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) were rescued at Indanan, Sulu today.

 

Kidnap victims Esteban Janamjam, 49 years old, from General Santos City, and Dulce Almers, 50 years old, from Apo beach in Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur, were rescued this morning after more than two (2) months in captivity. The Joint Task Force “Sulu“ (JTFS) was able to monitor the location of the said kidnap victims and initiated actions by conducting a special operations. Having the captors off guard, troops took advantage of the situation in rescuing the hostages.


Said kidnap victims were rescued as a result of the intensified operations conducted by our government troops in the area in compliance with the President’s order to free all kidnap victims and destroy the ASG at the soonest possible time. In line with the President’s order, Major General Delfin N. Lorenzana AFP (Retired), the Secretary of National Defense (SND) emphasized on the rescue of all remaining kidnap victims with utmost consideration to their safety and wellbeing.

In line with this, Western Mindanao Command (WestMinCom), with its new Commander, Major General Carlito G, Galvez Jr., will exhaust every legal means and commit all available resources to further intensify operations against the ASG and other terrorist groups in this part of the country. This is to ensure that the President’s intentions of freeing all hostages and having lasting peace and sustainable development in the area are realized way before his term ends.

Esteban and Almers were ferried to Zamboanga City for medical checkup and debriefing at the headquarters of the WestMinCom in Camp Navarro, Calarian, same city and turned over to the Anti-Kidnapping Group (AKG) of the Philippine National Police (PNP) who escorted the said rescued victims to their families. WestMinCom further extended financial assistance to the victims and provided a Philippine Navy “Islander” aircraft to ferry them to Davao City and ensure that the victims reunite with their families safely.
Esteban and Almers were abducted last October 26, 2016 on board a fishing vessel off the Coast of Pangutaran Island in Jolo, Sulu.
