GRP-NDF panels ok accelerated timetable on substantive agenda

OSLO, NORWAY—Negotiators from the Philippine government (GRP) and the National Democratic Front (NDF) today, August 25,  gave the green light for an accelerated timetable for its Reciprocal Working Committee (RWC) and Reciprocal Working Groups (RWG) to complete work on the substantive agenda of the peace talks in less than a year.

The Philippine government and the National Democratic Front (NDF) on Friday signed a joint statement to mark the culmination of the first round of formal peace talks and their commitment to continue the ceasefire.

Order to suspend all offensive operations of the NPA in Surigao Del Sur and Surigao Del Norte until August 31, 2016 to facilitate the release of the five (5) prisoners of war in NEMR

Given that a unilateral ceasefire declaration of the CPP-NPA is currently in effect since 12:01 midnight of August 21 until 11:59 midnight of August 27, 2016, the National Democratic Front of the Philippines – North Eastern Mindanao Region (NDFP-NEMR) hereby orders all units of the New People’s Army whose area of responsibility covers San Miguel, Tago, Tandag City, Cortes, Lanuza, Carmen, Madrid, Cantilan and Carrascal in Surigao del Sur and the whole province of Surigao del Norte to CONTINUE TO SUSPEND ALL OFFENSIVE OPERATIONS until midnight (12:00) of August 31, 2016.

CPP-NPA issues week-long ceasefire advisory

ABS-CBN news network reported that the CPP-NPA issued a 7-day unilateral ceasefire that will take effect starting 12:01 AM on Sunday, Aug 21, 2016 and will last until 11:59 p.m. on August 27.

The Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) and its armed wing, the New People’s Army (NPA) on Friday declared a 7-day unilateral ceasefire following the temporary release of their members who will take part in peace talks with the government.

LUCENA CITY, Quezon — Communist Party of the Philippines founder Jose Maria Sison thanked President Duterte on Tuesday, for assuring the rebel group that all consultants of the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP), the CPP’s political wing, would join the peace negotiations in Oslo, Norway next week.

“Once more, I am grateful to President Duterte for his good acts to move forward the peace negotiations between his government and the NDFP,” Sison told the Philippine Daily Inquirer through an online chat on Tuesday.

Lieutenant General Quidilla takes over the leadership of Southern Luzon Command 

Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City—Lieutenant General Ferdinand F Quidilla, Commander of the 9th Infantry Division, assumed the post of Command of Southern Luzon, which is the country’s more security sensitive part.

Quidilla, a South Cotabato native, took over the post from MGen Romeo Gan who held the position in an acting capacity after AFP Chief of Staff General Ricardo R Visaya vacated the post in July this year.

MANILA, Aug. 12 — Members of the government’s newly-created implementing panel and representatives of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) are scheduled to meet in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on August 13-14 to formally re-launch the two parties’ engagements for the implementation of the two-year-old Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro (CAB).

Army troops get medals for gallantry in action

FORT BONIFACIO, Taguig City – Pres. Rodrigo R. Duterte personally gave medals to 11 Army soldiers who were involved in the series of encounters against New People’s Army (NPA) during his visit at the Army’s 4th Infantry Division (ID) in Camp Evangelista, Barangay Patag, Cagayan de Oro City on Tuesday. 

Nine soldiers namely: 1Lts. Lorefel O Judaya, Marvin S Jacinto, Jehiel P Liw-agan, and Aljosh Iman A Arreola; Sgt. Harold D Nimenzo; Cpls. Raelcum T Mendador and Brendo C Espiritu; and Pfcs Jaynard E Llander and Ricky Jay P Borja received gold cross medals from the president for their gallantry in action during an encounter with 80 NPA members in Sitio Kambangon, Barangay Lilingayon, Valencia City, Bukidnon on August 5.

When the JASIG-protected NDFP consultants are released and get travel documents before August 20, it would be better than not to resume formal peace talks on August 20-27, 2016 because it is during the formal talks that the GPH and NDFP negotiating panels can discuss the mode of ceasefire and how best to arrange this.

International community supports new administration’s peace road map

International peace and development partners expressed strong support and optimism on the peace and development roadmap of President Rodrigo R. Duterte, even applauding the remarkable performance of his administration to resolve peace and security issues during his first month in office, a report posted on OPAPP Website on August 8 said.

In a briefing on the government’s peace agenda sponsored by OPAPP on August 4 at EDSA Shangri-la Hotel, World Bank Country Director Mara Warwick said on behalf of other international organizations and institution present said,  “We are very impressed with the work that OPAPP (Office of the Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process) has done in just a short time,”
