Peace advocates hopeful of resumption of talks

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, June 30 -- The recommendation of the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP) to suspend offensive operations from both the communist rebels and government forces as the conflict in Marawi City rages on is seen as “favorable conditions” for the resumption of the peace talks. 

Peace advocates such as Sowing the Seeds of Peace, Philippine Ecumenical Peace Platform, and Sisters Association in Mindanao have supported President Rodrigo Duterte’s pronouncement when he said he would like to see “clear indications of an enabling environment conducive to achieve just and lasting peace.”

Military changes strategy in fight against terrorists

The government’s losses in the Marawi crisis rose to 70 on Sunday, prompting changes in the fighting strategies of the military, which is relatively new to urban warfare. 

 On Monday, Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana defended the security forces from allegations of two left-leaning groups that women in evacuation centers feared they would be raped by soldiers.

“Such a high price to pay for the liberation of Marawi. But we remain undeterred and will carry the fight until our mission is completed,” Brig. Gen. Restituto Padilla Jr., spokesperson for the Armed Forces of the Philippines, said in reporting the military death toll.

Worsening crisis, death and destruction under Duterte regime

The Duterte regime’s key economic, social, security and foreign relations policies are basically a continuation of past measures which perpetuate the oppressive and exploitative semicolonial and semifeudal system. The US imperialists and the ruling big bourgeois compradors, big landlord class and bureaucrat capitalists remain the dominant forces in his government. 

 

The crisis of the ruling system continues to worsen in the first year under the Duterte regime as it fails to fulfill its promises of change. It has unleashed wars of death and destruction as it adopts ironfisted tactics and fascist methods to secure its rule and serve the interests of the ruling exploitative classes and foreign big capitalists.

The Duterte regime is proving itself to be fundamentally no different from previous regimes in terms of subservience to foreign imperialist-imposed economic and security policies. It is bound to face the Filipino people’s outrage for perpetuating foreign subservience, feudalism and fascism and refusing to heed the demand for basic social, economic and political reforms.

Army launches relief operations for Marawi

FORT BONIFACIO, Metro Manila – The Philippine Army, in partnership with local non-governmental organizations, launched a relief operation program for Marawi on June 13, 2017 here.

The Junior Chamber International, San Juan Dambana Chapter spearheaded the #OgopMarawi in partnerhip with the Civil Military Operations Group (CMOG) and Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA). Ogop is a local word in Marawi for help, thus this project aims to aid the internally displaced people (IDPs) and give morale support to soldiers deployed in Marawi City.

On presence of US military forces in Marawi

The Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) denounces the presence of American military forces in and around Marawi City and their armed interference in the on-going operations of the AFP.

The AFP’s admission that it is now being provided with “technical assistance” and fed with intelligence information by the US military indicates two things. First, that the US military is being allowed by the AFP to carry out intelligence operations, presumably, electronic and drone surveillance operations, in complete violation of Philippine sovereignty. GPH, MILF Agree To Create Single Communications Roadmap To Strengthen Public Knowledge On The Peace Process

The government (GPH) and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) will create a single communications roadmap to strengthen the knowledge of the public on the Bangsamoro peace process, said an online Mindanews report on June 5.

On Wednesday and Thursday, GPH implementing peace panel chair Irene Santiago and MILF implementing peace panel chair Mohagher Iqbal met in Davao City to work on the common communication roadmap for a two-day workshop funded by The Asia Foundation, according to a press statement issued by the Office of the Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process (OPAPP), the Mindanews report also said.
