Official ceasefire orders shown to communist peace panel

After a tussle over alleged truce violations by communist rebels, the National Democratic Front now hopes the ceasefire can 'proceed effectively'

MANILA, Philippines – The negotiating panel of the National Democratic Front of the Philippines has received copies of official military and police orders to suspend offensives against communist guerrillas over the holidays, the NDF panel head Fidel Agcaoili said in a statement on Thursday, December 26.

“We hope that from hereon the unilateral and reciprocal ceasefires declared by the two Parties shall proceed effectively,” Agcaoili said, days after the government accused the communist party of violating a ceasefire with 3 separate attacks on army and police personnel on Monday, December 23, the first day of the truce.

Parlade junks Reds’ self-defense claims on Dec. 23 attacks

MANILA – A ranking official of the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF ELCAC) on Thursday dismissed claims that the New People's Army (NPA) rebels were acting in self-defense when it conducted a series of attacks against government security forces on Dec. 23.

This, according to Major General Antonio Parlade, Jr., who is also Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Deputy Chief-of-Staff for Civil-Military Operations, in a statement to the Philippine News Agency.

In the Labo, Camarines Norte alone, a soldier was killed while six others were wounded. Some two two police officers were hurt following the detonation of anti-personnel mines in Tubungan, Iloilo while the attack in Tagkawayan, Quezon claimed no government casualties.

131 lawmakers call for resumption of peace talks

The prospect of renewed peace talks seems bleak for now, as Duterte and communist leader Jose Maria Sison cannot agree on where to hold the negotiations

MANILA, Philippines – Lawmakers across party lines are calling for the resumption of peace talks between the government and the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP).

House lawmakers on Thursday, December 19, filed House Resolution No. 636 seeking the “immediate resumption of peace negotiations” between the government and the NDFP. 

Among the 131 lawmakers who signed were House Deputy Minority Leader and Bayan Muna representative Carlos Zarate, Deputy Speakers Boyet Gonzales, Elray Villafuerte, Evie Escudero, Johnny Pimentel, Minority Leader Benny Abante, and Deputy Minority Leader Kit Belmonte.

QC ops 'devastating blow' to communist movement: AFP

MANILA -- The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) on Friday called the recent successful neutralization of two

ranking leaders of the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People's Army (CPP-NPA) in Quezon City as a devastating blow to the communist movement.

 

"The AFP, together with its PNP (Philippine National Police) counterparts, has struck yet another devastating blow to one of the groups that is determined to carry out liquidation missions against government officials from the security sector in Manila and other key cities," said AFP spokesperson, Marine Brig. Gen. Edgard Arevalo, in a message to reporters.

The rebel leaders, identified as Eleuterio Sadyaw Agmaliw alias "Omeng", leader of the "Kilusang Larangan Gerilya ng Sierra Madre"; and Freddie Daileg alias "Poldo", Deputy Secretary Larangan Gerilya Platun 1 of Central Luzon Regional Committee; died when they shot it out with lawmen serving the warrants for their arrest around 3: 30 a.m. Thursday.

Army commemorates National Human Rights Week

FORT BONIFACIO, Metro Manila – In a flag-raising ceremony held here today, December 9, the Philippine Army (PA) commemorates the 2019 National Human Rights Consciousness Week (NHRCW).

Newly-appointed Army Commanding General Lt. Gen. Gilbert I. Gapay led the activity which was conducted in line with Republic Act No. 9201, also known as the “National Human Rights Consciousness WeekAct of 2002”, that aims to bring awareness to the people of “their basic human rights in relation to the functions and services offered by these government instrumentalities.”

Duterte considers communists as 'friends'

MANILA -- Nearly a week after announcing his plan to revive peace talks with the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP), President Rodrigo Duterte on Tuesday said he sees the communist insurgents as his "friends."

The President said he could not be totally harsh on the members of the CPP, including its armed wing, the New People's Army (NPA), because he was able to establish good relations with them.

"Kriminal, nag-bayad sila ng buhay nila. The NPAs, magkaibigan naman kami niyan that's why we want to talk again (Criminals face death to pay the price of their wrongdoing. The NPA rebels, however, are my friends, that's why we want to talk again)," he said in a speech delivered at Palace's Rizal Hall.
