DPWH Provides Financial Assistance for Fallen Heroes in Basilan

CAMP AGUINALDO, Quezon City—The Department of Public Works and Highways sent financial assistance for the families of the fallen soldiers who died protecting a flagship project of the government in Basilan, a military official said.

LtGen Rustico Guerrero, Commander of Western Mindanao Command, said that financial assistance was sent by the public works department to the Army’s 64th Infantry Battalion in recognition of the heroism displayed by the soldiers who died securing the vital road project of the government in the province.

“Secretary Rogelio L Singson’s office sent the amount of P120,000 for the family of the six soldiers who died protecting the Basilan Circumferential Road on November 2. A P20,000 cheque will be sent to each of the legal dependents of our fallen heroes,” Guerrero said.

Guerrero made the statement during the visit of AFP Chief of Staff General Gregorio Pio P Catapang Jr at the headquarters of Western Mindanao Command in Zamboanga City at 10:30 a.m. yesterday (November 18).

Catapang went to Zamboanga City in order to visit the wounded soldiers and pin combat medals to those who displayed exemplary courage and acts of heroism during the 4-hour encounter with Abu Sayyaf bandits in Sulu at early afternoon of November 14.

Catapang said that he is thankful that other government agencies have also recognized the soldiers’ heroism.
“On behalf of the AFP, I would like to thank Secretary Singson for honouring our soldiers. We will continue to support the government’s effort to finish the Basilan Circumferential Road which would surely bring progress and prosperity for the people of Basilan,” Catapang said.
