Defense chief bids farewell to Army troopers

FORT BONIFACIO, Taguig City – Honorable Voltaire T. Gazmin will visit the Headquarters Philippine Army (HPA) on Friday, June 24, to bid farewell to the Army troopers before he steps down as Secretary of the Department of National Defense on June 30. A brigade-size parading troops from the different post units and offices of the Philippine Army will render testimonial review in honor of the SND to be held at ROTC Hunters Guerilla Field/HPA Parade Ground. Army Chief, Lt. Gen. Eduardo M. Año together with his staff, other HPA-based officers, enlisted personnel and civilian employees will attend the said event to welcome the outgoing defense chief. Gazmin was the 40th Commanding General of the Philippine Army. He held the position from July 13, 1999 to October 22, 2000. #

Rejoinder to Ernesto Angeles Alcanzare’s article in PDI “How Joma can help to win the peace”

I read the article in the Philippine Daily Inquirer by a certain Ernesto Angeles Alcanzare “How Joma can help to win peace” and felt obliged to make this response. The author describes himself as the main organizer of “YES FOR PEACE”, which is supposed to be a non-government organization (NGO).

I have never heard of this organization before and thought maybe this is just one of those fly-by-night NGOs that proliferate these days. It turns out it has some history starting from 1988. It turns out further that it has been associated since the 1990s with the office of the GPH president on the peace process starting from Presidential Assistant on the Peace Process Gen. Manuel Yan up to the present OPAPP. A photo posted on the organization’s Facebook account shows Mr. Ernesto Angeles Alcanzare and OPPAP head Ging Deles holding together a symbol of YES for PEACE during a celebration of the EDSA “revolution” in the presence of GPH Pres. Benigno Aquino III

On its Facebook page it says that in 2002, it “repackaged itself as YES FOR PEACE – Bayanihan para sa Kapayapaan. The questions were reformulated in cooperation with the Office of the Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process.”

Mindanao splinter group declares ceasefire with CPP-NPA

DAVAO CITY – A Mindanao splinter group of the Communist Party of the Philippines has declared a unilateral ceasefire with its former comrades in the CPP and its armed force, the New People’s Army.

The Rebolusyonaryong Partido ng Manggagawa-Mindanao (RPM-M), through a statement issued by its Central Committee, expressed its appreciation over the public statement of CPP founding chair Jose Maria Sison that they were opening their doors to talk with the leaders and members who had left the group.

MILF hopes Bangsamoro Peace process will ‘not be relegated’ in Duterte Administration

Expressing high regards to President-elect Rodrigo R. Duterte’s positive outlook on the importance of the Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL) passage “to appease the Bangsamoro people,” the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) is optimistic that the Bangsamoro peace process will not be relegated in the next administration.

In an official statement issued yesterday (June 11), MILF Chairman Al Haj Murad Ebrahim said, “With the advent of a new administration on June 30, 2016, we are confident that the Bangsamoro peace process will not be relegated in status, as it has proven to be potentially the most viable solution to address conflict arising from historical injustices committed against our people.”

Army extends assistance to soldier killed in action in Agusan del Norte

FORT BONIFACIO, Taguig City – The Philippine Army will extend assistance to a member of the Army's 23rd Infantry Battalion, who was declared dead on arrival in Butuan Doctors Hospital on June 9 after an encounter with the NPA. The family of Private Plavin Jhon Ybañez will receive special financial assistance and funeral services support from the government. Pvt. Ybañez, 26 years old, was hit at the right portion of his stomach after a fifteen-minute firefight with NPA rebels belonging to the North Central Mindanao Regional Committee in Brgy. Rizal, Buenavista, Agusan del Norte at about 6 a.m. on June 9. Ybañez was immediately brought to the Butuan Doctors Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 8:30 a.m. The Philippine Army will provide a special financial assistance which will be computed based on the basic salary of the deceased; a funeral service support amounting to P80,000.00; Alay sa Kawal amounting to P30,000.00; and house and lot remuneration. The family will also receive P250,000.00 special financial assistance from the Presidential Management Staff, Office of the President. They shall also be entitled to P50,000.00 if a member of the Armed Forces and Police Mutual Benefit Association (AFPMBAI), and another financial assistance amounting to P50,000 – P100,000 if a member of the Philippine Army Finance Center Producers Integrated Cooperative (PAFCPIC). Ybañez is from Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental. Meanwhile, PFC Jerwin Mancognahan, who was also wounded in the said encounter, is currently recuperating at Camp Evangelista Station Hospital in Cagayan de Oro City. #
