An added good sign for Oslo peace talks

WHEN the second round of the peace talks with the National Democratic Front (NDF) of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) begins today in Oslo, Norway, a delegation from the House of Representatives will be sitting with the government panel.

Deputy Speaker Bai Sandra Sema of Maguindanao heads the House group which will join the government panel led by the chief peace negotiator Secretary of Labor Silvestre Bello III. The two sides are scheduled to exchange drafts on a proposed bilateral ceasefire and will craft an amnesty proclamation for those in the decades-long rebellion of the New People’s Army, the military arm of the CPP. They will also begin talks on the more substantial issues of social and economic reforms.

Second round opens on an optimistic note but a thorny issue persists

The second round of the GRP-NDFP peace negotiations started with the two panels expressing optimism on the success of the talks. Both panels are acutely aware of the high expectations among our people especially since the next item in the substantive agenda, social and economic reforms, has been variously described as the “meat of the peace negotiations” and the “heart and soul of the peace negotiations”.  This is because it would involve addressing one of the principal causes of the ongoing armed conflict: widespread poverty along with issues of unemployment, underdevelopment, social injustice and so on.

MANILA, Oct. 1 -- Labor Secretary Silvestre H. Bello III, concurrent government chief negotiator on the talks with communist rebels, stressed on addressing the root causes of armed conflicts through socio-economic reforms in order to achieve permanent peace in the country.

Kampilan Division hosts OCD’s lecture on disaster preparedness

CAMP SIONGCO, Awang, Datu Odin Sinsuat, Maguindanao– The Office of Civil Defense of Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (OCD-ARMM) set up a one-day Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Execution Course held here today at the Officer’s Clubhouse.


The activity was attended by the local chief executives of Maguindanao province and a representative from 6ID.

The whole day activity aimed to boost the preparedness from disasters, both natural and manmade, including conflicts at the local level of the government. It discussed lectures on calamity and quick response fund and disaster preparedness, response, prevention and mitigation, and rehabilitation and recovery.

CPP welcomes scrapping all US war exercises under Duterte

The Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) welcomes the statement last night of GRP President Duterte declaring that war exercises to be conducted next week by US military forces will be the last.

In a speech before Filipinos in Hanoi, Vietnam, Duterte declared “I will serve notice to you now, that this will be the last military exercise, jointly Philippines-US, the last one.”
