CAMP AGUINALDO, Quezon City – "If you want a Medal for Valor and you need the opportunity to earn it, volunteer  and join the fight against the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) and other terrorist groups," was both AFP Chief General Eduardo Año’s challenge and invitation to Soldiers, Airmen, Sailors and Marines.

This drew applause from uniformed and non-uniformed personnel present during his talk Tuesday 24 January at Camp Navarro, Upper Calarian, Zamboanga City – the Headquarters of the Western Mindanao Command (WESMINCOM) which is at the forefront of the fight against the ASG.

Two kidnap victims rescued in Sulu

Camp Navarro, Calarian, Zamboanga City- January 19, 2017 (3a.m.) – Two (2) Filipinos held captive by the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) were rescued at Indanan, Sulu today.

 

Kidnap victims Esteban Janamjam, 49 years old, from General Santos City, and Dulce Almers, 50 years old, from Apo beach in Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur, were rescued this morning after more than two (2) months in captivity. The Joint Task Force “Sulu“ (JTFS) was able to monitor the location of the said kidnap victims and initiated actions by conducting a special operations. Having the captors off guard, troops took advantage of the situation in rescuing the hostages.

The Negotiating Panels of the Government of the Republic of the Philippines (GRP) and the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP), together with their respective delegations of negotiating bodies, consultants, advisors, resource persons, cooperators and staff successfully held the third round of formal talks in Rome City from January 19 to 25, 2017. The third round was facilitated by the Royal Norwegian Government (RNG) in cooperation with the Italian Government.

In a report by SunStar-Davao on January 24, Marilou Ampuan, one of the founders of Mindanao Islamic Chamber of Commerce, Inc. (MICCI) and President of the Universal Islamic Center raised concern to incorporate Shari’ah aspect to the Philippine Halal Export Development and Promotion Act of 2016.

She told reporters during the Davao Business Forum at Dermpath in SM City-Ecoland that religious significance in Halal industry is but necessary for the sector in Davao City to prosper and seize opportunities of a US$3 trillion-strong global industry value.

Third round in GRP-NDFP negotiations in Rome opens on optimistic note
Speaking in behalf of the RNG, Ambassador to the Philippines Erik Førner and Special Ambassador to the Philippines Peace Process Elisabeth Slattum, congratulated the Parties in the negotiations for their commitment and hard work in the previous two rounds and assured both sides of the RNG’s continuing support to the GRP-NDFP peace negotiations saying that “we are here for the long haul.”

In his opening statement, NDFP Chief Political Consultant Jose Maria Sison laid out the over-all perspective of the NDFP on the prospects and likely course of the peace talks.

He said, “I continue to declare that the two negotiating panels can negotiate in a non-adversarial way and overcome any obstacle by addressing the roots of the armed conflict and seeking to satisfy the demands of the people for basic social, economic and political reforms in order to lay the foundation of a just and lasting peace and build a Philippines that is truly independent, democratic, just, prosperous and progressive.”

CAMP AGUINALDO, Quezon City – The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) welcomes Rear Admiral Narciso A Vingson Jr as the new Deputy Chief of Staff and Lieutenant General Salvador Melchor B Mison Jr as the new Vice Chief of Staff in a ceremony held at the General Headquarters Building, Thursday, 12 January 2017.

“Rear Admiral Vingson is the concurrent The Inspector General, AFP. He will still head the office until the assumption of a new Inspector General,” Marine Colonel Edgard Arevalo, AFP Public Affairs Chief disclosed.
