Secretary General of HWPL Philippine Branch, John Rommel Garces said, “The Commissioner of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) as well as the Interim Chief Minister of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), Al Haj Ahod B. Ebrahim will participate to deliver their keynote speeches in the said event.”
The peace summit is aiming to further collect public support for the establishment of a legally binding international law for peace based on the Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War (DPCW). The DPCW, a comprehensive document which clarifies the role of members of the international society to prevent and resolve conflicts, is in the process.
As part of the process, HWPL and its affiliated youth organization, IPYG, promote a worldwide “Legislate Peace” (LP) project, which has gained 1.5 million supports from 195 countries through supporting signatures and peace letters written to their respective national leaders.
“The ongoing collection of the 1- million signatures and 100, 000 Peace Letters for the DPCW, here in the Philippines, will be presented during the festival showing the united efforts of the Filipinos in support to the DPCW,“ Garces said.
"This event is expected to gain support for the DPCW to be introduced to the UN, to open the channels in developing peace education and culture of peace and to foster harmony amongst religions,” Garces stressed.
Garces added that in line with the commemoration of the National Peace Consciousness Month, the event will pave the way for the public launching of the decommissioning of MILF combatants and weapons on September 07, 2019 at Simuay, Sultan Kudarat, Maguindanao as part of the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro (CAB) signed between the government and the Moro Front.
In 2014, Chairman Man Hee Lee of HWPL initiated the Mindanao Peace Agreement with the presence of former Maguindanao Governor Esmael “Toto” Mangudadatu, now a member of Philippine Congress representing the 1st District of Maguindanao, and Archbishop Fernando Capalla from the Catholic Church.
Both leaders signed a peace agreement which brought out local peacebuilding efforts to counter the conflict in Mindanao. This triggered a series of peace projects, including the introduction of nationwide peace education for students, commemoration of peace in museum, and library in Davao City, and inter-religious dialogues for mutual understanding.
HWPL is an international organization headquartered in Seoul, Republic of Korea - committed to advancing peace through DPCW (Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War), associated with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (UN ECOSOC).
After proclaiming the Declaration of World Peace in 2013, HWPL expanded its peace movement in 70 countries. A few years later, HWPL has reached 127 countries.
