Bangsamoro Parliament approves bill protecting IDP rights on second reading

COTABATO CITY - The Bangsamoro Parliament has taken a significant step towards safeguarding the rights of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) by approving BTA Bill No. 32, or the Rights of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region Act of 2024, on its second reading.

The bill, which passed through viva voce voting, aims to protect and promote the rights of Bangsamoro residents who have been displaced due to conflict or natural disasters. The legislation outlines essential protections for IDPs, ensuring their rights are upheld against criminal offenses and unlawful acts during and after displacement.

Meanwhile, BTA Bill No. 334, or the Mental Wellness and Family Week Act of BARMM, has entered its first stage of legislation. The bill proposes designating the first seven days of Shawwal, the tenth month in the Hijri calendar, every year as mental wellness and family week in the region.

Another bill, Parliament Bill No. 240, has been referred to the Committee on Finance, Budget, and Management after reaching its second legislative stage. The bill, authored by Member of Parliament Amilbahar Mawallil, aims to standardize budget proposal submissions, enhance transparency and accountability, and improve planning and efficiency in budgetary processes.

These legislative actions demonstrate the Bangsamoro Parliament's commitment to addressing key issues facing the region, including the protection of vulnerable populations, promoting mental well-being, and ensuring responsible financial management.
