3ID Sends Troops to Leyte as Security Force for Papal Visit
CAMP PERALTA, Jamindan, Capiz: The 3rd
Infantry (Spearhead) Division, Philippine Army sent to Leyte a
contingent composed of nine officers and 257 enlisted personnel led by
Lt Col Marion Sison.
These troops shall serve as augmentation to the Joint Task Force “POPE” created by the Central Command, Armed Forces of the Philippines to conduct security operations and assist in the maintenance of peace and order, to ensure the safety and successful visit of Pope Francis in Tacloban and Palo, Leyte on 17 January 2015.
His Holiness Pope Francis, the leader of the Roman Catholic Church, and his official entourage will be in the Philippines on 15 – 19 January 2015. As the only predominantly Catholic country in Asia, devotees are very eager to meet and see the Pope in person. During his stay in the country, the Pope will also visit the victims of Super Typhoon Yolanda in Tacloban City and Palo, Leyte.
In his guidance, Major General Rey Leonardo B Guerrero, Commander of the 3rd Infantry Division, Philippine Army reminded the troops to maintain a high state of discipline and preparedness. In this particular mission, the troops should be ready to thwart any attempt by armed groups to disrupt the peaceful conduct of the activities and ensure the safety and security of the Pope and the general public.
A send-off ceremony for the troops was held at the Iloilo International Airport on 06 January 2015 by Col Eric Uchida, Commander of 301st Infantry Brigade.
