Bukidnon clash kills 5 NPA rebels, 2 soldiers wounded

MANILA - Reports reaching Manila indicated that at least five suspected
members of the New People's Army were killed and two Special Forces
soldiers were wounded after a brief firefight in Barangay Mendiz,
Pangantucan, Bukidnon.
Captain Alberto Caber, public affairs chief of the Easter Mindanao Command (Eastmincon), said on Wednesday that the rebel fatalities were what's called in military terms as "body-count."
Caber said the rebels were led by a certain Andy
from the NPA-North Central Mindanao Regional Committee, but did not
identify the two wounded members of the 3rd Special Forces Company of

The soldiers had launched a combat operation in the area after receiving information about the presence of the rebels. They made contact at around 4:14 p.m.
Caber said the rebels left behind 1 AK-47 rifle, 19 back packs, food and medical supplies, and subversive documents.
"The wounded soldiers were immediately brought to a medical facility for treatment. The other troops are still on pursuit operations in the area as of reporting time," he said.
According to the battalion commander, Lieutenant Colonel Nasser Lidasan, the rebel fatalities were turned over to local officials for proper disposition.
"We will provide the necessary assistance to concerned local officials in order to facilitate the decent burial of the NPA members," Lt. Col. Lidasan added.
