AFP Chief exhorts soldiers: "Strengthen commitment"

CAMP AGUINALDO, Quezon City--Armed Forces of the Philippines's Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Gilbert Gapay reminded the troops of the Southern Luzon Command to double down on their mission to win the peace in Southern Tagalog and Bicol regions.

Lt. Gen. Gapay visited Camp Nakar in Quezon Province to relay his guidance to the unit that safeguards the gateway to the country's seat of government from the South.

"We must prove through our actions the qualities that distinguish the Filipino soldier. Always remain respectful and humble. We should never be complacent and sit down on our laurels. We should always do our jobs and accomplish them to the best of our abilities," Lt. Gen. Gapay said.

His visit to Camp Nakar on Monday, September 28, is a continuation of his tour of major camps nationwide following his designation as AFP Chief of Staff early in August.

"I am proud and elated to know that SOLCOM continues to gain ground in sustaining our joint and interagency operations that have resulted in the significant reduction of communist insurgents in your area of responsibility," Lt. Gen. Gapay said, who also visited the 902nd Infantry Brigade headquarters in Labo, Camarines Norte that same day.

He cited the recent surrender of eight NPA members at Bulalacao, Oriental Mindoro last September 20, 2020, which according to him showed the sincerity and genuine efforts of the government in employing the Whole of Nation approach.

A total of 408 communist armed members and supporters were neutralized in Southern Tagalog and Bicol so far this year.

This includes 35 who were killed, 334 who surrendered, and 39 who were apprehended in various internal security and community support operations.

"Let us sustain this momentum so that we can finally bring just and lasting peace in the country," Lt. Gen. Gapay said.

Earlier visited Lt. Gen. Gapay visited the Western Command in Palawan on September 25, the Northern Luzon Command in Tarlac on September 7, Western Mindanao Command in Zamboanga City on August 19, and the Eastern Mindanao Command in Davao City on August 16.

"The purpose of my visit is not only to lay the grounds of my leadership and my guidance, but also to ensure that our actions are in sync with our operational thrusts and goals," Lt. Gen. Gapay said.

"Having said that, and for us to effectively perform our duties, it is imperative that the Unified Commands' plans and programs are aligned with the General Headquarters’ vision and mission," Lt. Gen. Gapay concluded.///
