NPA not involved in Sorsogon journo killing—spokesman
Unable to thresh out the truth, the Philippine National Police (PNP)-Sorsogon has resorted to baselessly pointing fingers at the New People’s Army (NPA) and accusing it as responsible for last year’s killing of local journalist Jobert Bercasio.
In a report released by Lt. Col. Benito Dipad Jr., the PNP-Sorsogon last January 21 declared the Bercasio case closed and “concluded” that the NPA-Sorsogon is the perpetrator of the crime.
“This baseless declaration of the PNP that Bercasio’s case is closed is a direct assault to press freedom and justice,” said Ka Samuel Guerrero, NPA-Sorsogon spokesperson.
“The revolutionary movement has become a convenient scapegoat for the PNP,” Guerrero further said. The PNP has used this tactic since the beginning of time, showing no clear interest in serving justice for victims, Guerrero added.
Journalist Jobert Bercasio was murdered last September 14, 2020 by still unidentified assailants. He was a reporter and commentator of an online broadcast in Sorsogon City, and was critical of local politics.
Before the shooting incident, he reported about an illegal entry of trucks in a quarry site in Bulan town. Bercasio was shot about 100 meters from city police headquarters.
The National Democratic Front-Bicol thru its spokesperson Ma. Roja Banua, clarified that Bercasio has no case or charge in the revolutionary courts. She further said that NDF-Bicol salutes and supports media workers like Bercasio for their daring and fearless reports tackling political issues.
Both the NDF-Bicol and NPA-Sorsogon point to Duterte’s state forces as likely behind Bercasio’s murder, comparing it to the cold-blooded murder of several activists and critics in the province like Nelly Bagasala and Ryan Hubilla.
