Duterte: Peace with NPAs may come ‘much earlier’

Peace may come earlier than you think, President Rodrigo Duterte said on Thursday, referring to peace talks with communist rebels that have been terminated some two years back.

“With the rate that the (New People’s Army, or NPA) are surrendering, I think we’d be able to realize peace much earlier,” he said during the oath-taking of government officials on Thursday night.

Security issues raised during PRRD’s meet with AFP, PNP

MANILA -- Several pressing security issues, including the fight against enemies of the state, were raised during the joint police and military command conference with President Rodrigo Duterte at Malacañan Palace on Thursday night, Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said on Friday.

 

During his meeting with top officials of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Philippine National Police (PNP), the President reiterated his appeal for them to “do better,” Lorenzana said in a text message.

“What he (Duterte) normally wants in a command conference is to be briefed about the police and military operations against the enemies of the state: drugs, Terrorism, insurgency, criminality,” said Lorenzana, who attended the joint AFP-PNP command conference.

Condemn Duterte’s disregard for public health

The Filipino people are on the receiving end of Rodrigo Duterte’s gross disregard for public health in the face of the 2019 Novel Coronavirus outbreak. Much like the indifference he has shown during recent calamities, Duterte spurned responsibility to take decisive action against the possible spread of the virus which has now hit dozens of countries.

Afraid of China’s admonition, Duterte has opted to secure his selfish interests over the people’s welfare. Only after widespread condemnation did he accede to a travel ban from the virus’ country of origin. This is belatedly after the World Health Organization declared a Public Health Emergency, and different governments have decidedly taken drastic measures to limit the spread of the virus.
