Comelec to enforce ban on infrastructure, social service projects ahead of 2025 elections
The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has reiterated its commitment to enforcing existing laws prohibiting the implementation of infrastructure and social service projects during the election period, which begins on January 12, 2025.
Comelec Chairman George Garcia stated that the 1985 law prohibits such activities during elections, and the commission will strictly adhere to it unless the law is amended.
"Our current law imposes a ban on public works and social services. This is a 1985 law that prohibits such activities. As long as it remains unchanged, the Commission on Elections will enforce it," Garcia emphasized.
However, he clarified that ongoing projects will be allowed to continue, while new projects that appear to be solely for campaign purposes will be halted by the Comelec.
"We will not tolerate projects that are conceived solely by politicians for their campaigns. If you've been in office for a long time, and you only decide to build a road during campaign season, we will not allow it," Garcia added.
Basic services such as aid and scholarship programs will continue, but they must have clear processes and the distribution should not involve politicians, according to Garcia.
The upcoming election period aims to ensure a fair and transparent electoral process, with the Comelec diligently enforcing regulations to prevent any abuse of power or undue influence.
