Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City— The largest group to surrender this year, a total of 72 New People’s Army rebels surrendered to government authorities in South Poblacion, Maramag, Bukidnon last March 22, 2014.
Said rebels coordinated with the 4th Infantry Division to facilitate their safe and voluntary surrender to government authorities. They also brought with them a total of 69 assorted firearms.

In a ceremony held at Camp Evangeista in Cagayan De Oro City today, March 28, the AFP formally received the former rebels and their firearms. They were also given the remuneration for the firearms they returned under the Balik Baril Program.

With the surrender, NPA presence in Eastern Mindanao is expected to weaken, further crippling the communist rebel group who also lost its top leaders, Benito and Wilma Tiamzon, the same day.

The AFP Chief of Staff General Emmanuel T Bautista continues to encourage more rebels to abandon the armed struggle and be productive members of the mainstream society.

He urged the remaining members of the rebel group to end the violence that lasted for over four decades and take the example set by the Moro Islamic Liberation Front which successfully signed the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro yesterday, March 27.
