Two Encounters in Sorsogon and Masbate: 4 Dead, 2 Wounded
CASTILLA, Sorsogon – Two separate encounters
between Army Troops and Communist Terrorists have transpired today,
involving the 9th Infantry Battalion, based in Masbate province and
31st Infantry Battalion, based in Sorsogon province.
Three members of the Special Partisan Unit (SPARU) of the New People’s Army were killed while two soldiers were wounded in an encounter in Sorsogon and another soldier was killed in an encounter in Masbate.
In Brgy Bacolod, Irosin, Sorsogon, on 11:30 a.m., a squad of Bayanihan Team of 31st Infantry Batallion was conducting house to house dialogues when fired-upon by ten Special Partisan Unit (SPARU) members of the New People’s Army. Said troops returned fire that resulted to the killing of three SPARU members.
Three pistols and one hand grenade were also recovered from the encounter site. Pursuit operation was also conducted against the fleeing SPARU. PNP SOCO was also in the encounter site for the investigation. The two wounded soldiers were immediately evacuated to the nearest hospital and are now on stable condition.
In Brgy Bagacay, San Jacinto, Ticao Island, Masbate at around 9 a.m., one soldier of 9th Infantry Battalion was also killed by three SPARU members. Name of dead soldier is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. The soldier was on his way from Bagacay port to mainland Masbate to send money to his family when shot to death by the perpetrators. The perpetrators withdrew using two motorized bancas after the killing.
A squad who immediately reinforced the dead soldier was landmined by the NPAs along their way towards the victim. No casualty was recorded after the explosion.
According to Col. Cesar M. Idio, the 903rd Infantry Brigade Commander, “We extend our deepest sympathies to the families and friends of our soldiers and the NPAs killed. It is tragic that the NPAs who were killed have taken arms against the Filipino nation when the Sorsoganons understand that only through peace can development and social justice be attained. We condemn the NPA’s use of landmine, because it is a clear violation of the International Humanitarian Law.”
