The Chairman of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF)-Peace
Implementing Panel (PIP) expressed the Front’s commitment to fulfill the
obligations set in the peace agreements with the Government of the
Philippines (GPH) amidst the challenges brought by the Coronavirus
(COVID-19) Pandemic.
”I want to assure the Bangsamoro people, especially my
comrades in the MILF, of our unwavering commitment to fulfill the
obligations set in the signed peace agreements,” Mohanger Iqbal,
MILF-PIP chairman said in a statement.
The two parties, GPH and MILF, signed the 2012 Framework Agreement on the Bangsamoro (FAB) and its four (4) annexes and the 2014 Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro (CAB).
Iqbal cited
in the statement how the threat of COVID-19 has also affected vital
peace-building efforts in the conflict affected areas including those
those assisted by longtime partners and friends in the Bangsamoro peace
process.
He also mentioned the adjustments made
in daily lives such as closing businesses, observance of physical
distancing, postponement of social gatherings- including commemorations
and activities related to the peace process - and the imposition of
checkpoints and community quarantines in able to contain the virus.
“To
ensure that the Bangsamoro remains on the path towards sustainable
growth, peace, justice, and reconciliation, the GPH and MILF peace
implementing panles will worlk together in slowing the spread and
flatten the curve of this pandemic,”the statement read.
Iqbal
called on the international community, private sector and civil society
organizations to join the panels’efforts to ameliorate the suffering of
the most vulnerable populations b providing the necessary medical
supplies and services.
