MBHTE allocates over P11-M for school feeding in Maguindanao del Norte

MATANOG, Maguindanao del Norte – The Ministry of Basic, Higher, and Technical Education (MBHTE) has granted over P11 million to support school-based feeding programs aimed at improving the nutrition and academic performance of Bangsamoro learners in Maguindanao. The announcement coincided with the culmination of Nutrition Month activities in the region, underscoring the Bangsam
ro Government’s commitment to fostering the health and well-being of its students.

MBHTE Minister Mohagher Iqbal and Director General for Basic Education Abdullah Salik Jr. formally handed over a check valued at P11,012,400 to Maguindanao del Norte Schools Division Superintendent Dr. Alma Abdula-Nor during a ceremony held on Tuesday, July 29, in Matanog.

This funding is dedicated to the implementation of the 2025–2026 Home-Grown School Feeding (HGSF) program, which aims to enhance learners’ nutrition, health, and academic outcomes through regular provision of nutritious meals within school settings.

For the coming academic year, the HGSF program targets 10,451 elementary students across 10 municipalities—5,244 students from 15 schools in Maguindanao del Norte and 5,207 students from 13 schools in Maguindanao del Sur.

Iqbal emphasized the profound benefits of providing nutritious meals, noting that they foster greater learner activity and support physical, emotional, and mental well-being. “Alam niyo—this school feeding program is one of the most important programs to the MBHTE,” he said, highlighting its critical role. He further added, “Kapag ang kalusugan ng mga anak natin ay gaganda, syempre aangat at aangat ang kalidad ng kanilang edukasyon,” underscoring the direct link between improved health and enhanced educational quality.

The success of the HGSF program reflects strong collaboration among multiple stakeholders, including the United Nations World Food Programme (UN-WFP), the Embassy of Japan, local farmers, educators, and local government units.

Support services complementing the feeding initiative include the provision of kitchen utensils and tools, and Iron Fortified Rice from UN-WFP; garden tools and seeds from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Agrarian Reform (MAFAR); deworming services from the Ministry of Health (MOH); and fresh produce sourced from local farmers.

Dr. Abdula-Nor lauded the launch of the HGSF program and the Nutrition Month culmination as symbolic of the shared dedication to ensuring that “every child is a better learner.” She stressed that the spirit of the celebration should extend beyond the designated month to permeate every day in classrooms, homes, and communities.

As a testament to sustained commitment, Minister Iqbal and UN-WFP Cotabato Head Lyca Therese Sarenas led the signing of a joint agreement to further strengthen the program’s execution.

The ceremony was attended by several prominent officials, including MBHTE Director General for Basic Education Abdullah Salik Jr. and board members; Bangsamoro Planning and Development Authority Director General Engr. Mohajirin Ali; MOH Chief of Nutrition Celia Sagaral; MDN Community Affairs Officer IV Dr. Baiking Balinte; Matanog Mayor Zohria Bansil-Guro and vice mayor; as well as representatives from the security sector.

The Bangsamoro Government’s observance of the 51st National Nutrition Month this July aligned with the national theme, “Food and Nutrition Security Maging Priority: Sapat na Pagkain, Karapatan Natin,” emphasizing that food and nutrition security remain fundamental rights for all.
